Old Souls

"To wake up from that after years, after decades... to become old souls thrown back into youth like that..." A quote from Leonardo DiCaprio's character in the 2010 film Inception and the title of a song in its accompanying soundtrack. If you're looking for a full explanation of the film's plot, you won't find it here. Trust me, there are entire websites devoted to that stuff.

Old Souls as a musical composition interested me more in relation to this post because of composer Hans Zimmer's genius. The song is around seven minutes of eerie, distant ambient noise and a haunting guitar riff that gives it all a dream-like quality. The soundtrack and film both delve heavily into the concept of time and its mysterious role in our lives, and I can't help but find myself thinking of those grand concepts whenever I watch a sunset at the end of a day. The picturesque quality of the sun is so lively and yet almost ancient in its expression, and I felt that Old Souls captured that age perfectly in its composition.
